Steps to Restore Previous Version of a File in Windows 10

You have made several changes to your Word file over the last few days, but want to access the old version of the file. You cannot keep using Ctrl+Z to revert to the previous changes since you closed the file. If you are short on time and want to send this file via email in the next couple of hours, you can try these solutions.

  1. Using Windows’ built-in Previous Version Tool
  • Go to the folder containing the file.
  • Right-click the file and select Restore previous version. OR You can select Properties and click the Previous Versions

Most of the times, this tab is usually empty. Windows saves these changes only when a restore point is created.

  • If you do see files in your Folder versions list, select a version you want to restore. Click the Open button to check contents of the file.
  • To restore the previous version, click Restore You will be prompted to overwrite the existing file version if it is present in the same location.
  1. Using Cloud-based Syncing and Storage

If you are using Dropbox or Google Drive and the file is located where it will automatically be uploaded to the cloud’s server, you can retrieve it. Note that most of these services back up the file up to a month.

Right-click the file and choose Use previous versions in the Dropbox section of the menu. Now, you can see various versions of the file. You can download any one of them.

To recover your file from Google Drive, go to drive.google.com. Click My Drive on the left pane. Find your file. Now click three-dot menu on the toolbar and choose to Manage Versions.
