Repairing Windows XP Word File


Microsoft Office Word 2002 and all later versions have a built-in functionality called Open and Repair which enables the Word program to automatically detect and fix any problems in a Word document while it is opened. In Windows XP, you can however choose to force open the Open and Repair feature in Microsoft Word while opening a Word document.

Steps to perform Windows XP Word file repair using Open and Repair tool:

  • Run Microsoft Word program on Windows XP
  • Scroll on to the File tab and click on Open option. In Microsoft Office Word 2007 and later, click on the Microsoft Office button at the top right corner of the Word program and click on Open
  • A dialog box called Open appears, select the specific Word document which you want to troubleshoot and repair
  • Once the file that is to be repaired is selected, click on the down-arrow beside the Open button. A drop down label appears, select Open and Repair option to begin Windows XP Word file repair

The Open and Repair feature scans for any issues in that Word file and tries to resolve them to make it re-accessible. However, note that this in-built function is not capable of fixing Windows XP Word files if those files are corrupted or are severely damaged.   • Zipping / unzipping errors or errors faced while downloading Word files can lead them to get corrupted
  • It is sometimes possible that you open a Word file only to find out it is inaccessible due to errors unknown
