Brief summary:
When you update your present version of
Windows operating system to any newer version such as Windows 8.1, there
can be situations where in all of the stored personal contents are not
moved to the updated version of Windows OS. Similarly this can happen
when you reinstall, reset or degrade your Windows operating system. This
can be due to permission issues with the existing files while upgrading
to the newer version of Windows operating system. Otherwise, all
existing files will be moved to a folder named Windows.old, allowing you
to conveniently restore them after Windows 8.1 upgrade.
Before formatting any Windows or any other OS
running on hard drive, the most basic rule is to create a backup of all
important data. However, if you did not feel the need to create
backup of your important data, or if you were unable to do it due to any
reasons, you might lose some files after the process. However, you
can still restore them after Windows 8.1 upgrade unless any
new partition has not been created or reformatted in the previous
volume’s place.
Other problems that can cause data loss
while updating:
