A FAT file system short for File Allocation Table is the name of one of the file system architectures used for type of memories on any Hard Drive. Its design is simple and robust which is best used for low weight implementations. It is still used on almost all operating systems on Personal Computers, Smartphones, Embedded systems, etc. due to its reliability and compatibility features. There are a few famous variants in FAT file systems such as FAT 32, FAT 16, and FAT 12 file systems. These days FAT file systems are most commonly found and are default file systems on Floppy Disks, USB Drives, Flash memories, memory cards, digital cameras, and all other removable media.
FAT file systems are very reliable and robust but these file systems have their own set of drawbacks such as overhead size, complexity level for smaller volumes as well as limited functionality and support.
FAT file system – File deletion:
When erasing a file in a FAT file system, the system only marks that file as deleted on its file directory entry, marking clusters in FAT file system as "empty". But clusters in its systems retain original file's contents. If you write any new data on it again, the original file data shall be overwritten by new data.
File deletion - Recycle Bin: Its basic principle of operation is; the recycle bin is nothing more some space on the hard drive. Any file that is deleted on a Windows system is moved to the recycle bin. Only deleting the data from the recycle bin permanently erases the data (to the operating system).
There can be various reasons due to which files can be deleted from a FAT file system memory drive. Some of the most common ones are mentioned here:
