What is a DOCX file?
Any document with file extension .docx is a Microsoft Office Word 2007 (and later versions) document file in XML format. A DOCX file in XML Zip Archive may contain spreadsheets, presentations, word processing documents, charts and other information.
There are umpteen ways that results in the Word file corruption. Nevertheless whatever may be the reason, you can try to open and repair corrupted DOCX files manually. You can be rest assured any corrupt DOCX files can be repaired with one of the methods mentioned here. Just try to perform DOCX file repair by following these methods.
Firstly don’t be too early to declare the DOCX files as corrupt
Assuming that the DOCX file is corrupt even before trying other options can be a blunder, unless you know for sure it corrupted, say, due to virus, etc. It could be possible for MS Word or even the Windows OS to have issues in accessing the Word file. Before you try to restore a backup or recover the DOCX file, try accessing other Word documents. Or, try opening the file, which is inaccessible from any other computer. You never know this may work for you.
If it is still showing the same errors, it’s safe to conclude it as a corrupted Word file. Now try these methods in order to repair corrupted DOCX files.
Make a copy of that DOCX file
This isn't really a DOCX file fix, but it’s definitely a crucial preliminary action. If there’s no backup copy of the corrupt Word file available, create a copy of the corrupted file and store it on any removable media. There's a possibility that the corruption in the file could become worse or completely destroyed over time while trying to repair it. Having a backup copy of the file at least now may save you from even more trouble later on.
Method 1: Check your email for a copy of the DOCX file
In most cases, you may have mailed a copy of that file to someone at some point of time. If so, a copy of the file shall be in its corresponding Sent Items folder, attached to the email you sent. You can easily re-download the healthy DOCX file.
Method 2: Run CHKDSK tool
Try running CHKDSK against the drive containing the corrupted file as the error could be caused by corruptions on file system, and CHKDSK might be able to fix the corruption. Running CHKDSK allows you to test the condition of the file system, which helps you in determining where exactly the problem persists - at the file system or within the DOCX file itself.
Method 3: Try exporting the file to another format
If you are able to open the file in MS Word, try to save the file in any other file format (RTF / TXT). Sometimes, this helps to strip off the bugs in that document to repair docx file issues.
Method 4: Extract the raw text from that document
Although saving the DOCX file as an RTF / TXT file usually works quite well, that method is of no use the MS Word is unable to open the file itself. So, this technique is to use another word document processor that supports MS Word files. You can use a file editor to manually recover text from any file.
