Check External Disks are enabled to Mount
Connect the USB drive to your Mac and go to Finder and select Preferences. Ensure External disks is check/tick marked.
If it is enabled to mount, then you should check if the USB flash drive is detected by your Mac. To do that;
If you can see the USB drive under the ‘USB hub’, then the flash drive is recognized by Mac. To cross check the same by going to file menu and selecting Go and then Go to folder and type /Volumes/. This will show the mounting point of all the connected drives to your Mac.
