How many of you have encountered situations where your Outlook has stopped working or stuck at processing? Most of us right?
Yes, it is a very common problem faced by Outlook users. This post provides 4 simple ways you can follow to troubleshoot this problem and resume Outlook normally.
- Install the latest Office & Windows updates
Any application works best when it’s up to date, similar is the case with Outlook. New features and performance enhancements are released regularly through updates. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of them, choose to automatically install updates.
To automatically install updates, go to Start and select Control panel. Find Windows update and select Turn on automatic updates.
If this doesn’t fix your problem, go to the next step.
- Repair Office programs
Repairing your office programs can resolve issues with Outlook not working or hanging.
- Go to Control panel (Start > Control panel)
- Choose Programs > Programs & Features
- Find Microsoft Office and click Change
- Click on Repair and follow the on-screen instructions to repair your Office program
If this doesn’t resolve your issue, go to the next step to disable add-ins.
- Disable add-ins
To check if there are issues with add-ins, hold Start button and R together to open Run. Type Outlook/safe and hit Enter. If Outlook functions normally, it means there may be an issue with add-ins. To disable them,
- Click on Options in the File menu and select Add-ins
- Select COM-add-ins and click on Go
- Clear all checkboxes in the list
- Restart Outlook and check if it starts normally
- If the issue doesn’t occur, you can add the add-ins one by one until the issue occurs, so you know the problematic add-in.
- Repair Outlook data files
Outlook stores a backup of all email accounts in your system. These files are called data files. Any issue with these data files can result in Outlook not working. To fix such data files, Microsoft provides a built-in repair tool called Scanpst.exe. It is usually installed with Outlook and can be used to fix minor errors with Outlook data files.
However, this manual method is time-consuming and may require being run several times before the repair is complete. Instead, it is best to use specific tools designed for this purpose.
